Hydration is an essential part of an active lifestyle. Your body loses water through sweat and breathing, and fluid needs can increase during exercise, particularly in hot or humid environments.
Before Exercise
Start your workout adequately hydrated rather than waiting until you feel extremely thirsty.
Drinking water regularly throughout the day is generally more practical than trying to consume a large amount immediately before training.
During Exercise
The amount you need during exercise depends on factors such as:
- Exercise intensity
- Workout duration
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Sweat rate
- Individual needs
Short, moderate workouts may require relatively little additional fluid, while longer or more intense sessions can increase fluid requirements.
After Exercise
Continue drinking fluids after your workout to help replace what you lost through sweating.
For longer or very sweaty sessions, electrolytes may also be useful in some situations.
Listen to Your Body
Thirst, urine color, workout conditions, and individual sweat patterns can provide useful clues about hydration.
Avoid assuming that everyone needs exactly the same amount of water.
Most importantly, hydration should be part of your overall daily routine rather than something you only think about when exercising.
Keep your water bottle nearby, stay consistent, and make hydration a normal part of your fitness lifestyle.
